Ed Foster
Student Engagement
Ed Foster is a leading UK expert on student engagement. He has extensively researched issues such as student induction, the first year experience, student retention and the needs of particular student groups, for example male learners.
Ed recently managed the HERE (Higher Education, Retention & Engagement) project as part of the national ‘What Works? Student Retention & Success’ programme (2008-2012). He headed a consortium of three universities researching student transition, the first year experience and retention.

Dr. Rebecca Edwards
Project Officer
Dr. Rebecca Edwards has been appointed as ABLE Project Officer at NTU specifically to focus on the objectives of the project. She is experienced at handling data and conducting research and analysis. After completing a PhD in Chemistry at Durham University, where she was involved with teaching undergraduate and master’s students, she enjoyed two years working in research and development in the chemicals industry before taking the post at NTU with the hope of improving student outcomes using data driven approaches.

Prof. dr. ir. Tinne De Laet
Student Counselling Manager
Prof. dr. ir. Tinne De Laet is an expert in education and the transition from secondary to higher education in particular. She is a practitioner who manages a team of student counsellors and tutors. Tinne has a managing role within the Student Counselling and Tutorial Service, providing her with first-hand experience on the transition from secondary to higher education.

Sven Charleer
PhD candidate
Sven Charleer is a PhD candidate at the Human-Computer Interaction group, Department of Computer science at KU Leuven, Belgium, where he focusses on visualising learning analytics data to create effective dashboards for teachers, guidance counsellors and students. His interests cover both personal dashboards to support student awareness and reflection, as well as creating collaboration environments through interactive visualisations on tabletops and large displays.
In 2003, Sven obtained his Master’s degree in Computer Science at KU Leuven. He spent 10 years in the industry, working on multiple projects, including an international HR Service Center Management system (NorthgateArinso, Brussels) and the video game MotoGP 09/10 (Monumental Games, Nottingham). He started his PhD in 2013 and has contributed to the European FP7 – weSPOT project, the CIP – eCloud project and the Erasmus+ ABLE project.

Dr. Maarten van de Ven
Head of Department
Dr. Maarten van de Ven is head of the department of Higher Education at ICLON. Next to his management tasks, he is a consultant on online pedagogics and assessment. As an educational psychologist, Maarten worked over 30 years in the area of educational technology in Higher Education, and has experience in educational research, design and implementation of elearning activities, courseware design and production, project management.
Topics of his research include didactical principles underlying educational technology, computer simulations in Higher Education and strategy for implementing educational technology. He produced four books on elearning and courseware development and 40 papers on elearning and courseware development, including 15 presentations on elearning and courseware development at international conferences. He was the editor of the site E-pedagogy.

Dr. Maartje van den Bogaard
Education Consultant
Dr. Maartje van den Bogaard is an education consultant and researcher at the department of higher education at ICLON. She has over ten years of expertise as consultant, teacher trainer and researcher in engineering education, student success and policy and administration.
She also taught bachelor courses in mechanical and systems engineering and she teaches methodology of human subject research in the Delft University of Technology Graduate School. Maartje currently is involved in projects regarding learning analytics, transition to university, first year student success and curriculum development.

Dr. Nynke Bos
Educational Researcher
Dr. Nynke Bos works as an researcher at the department of higher education at ICLON at Leiden University. She has over ten years of experience as a policy advisor and researcher in the area of educational innovation, mainly with a focus on online learning.
The topic of her PhD is the use of Learning Analytics in a Blended Learning Environment. Her research interest include establishing determinants of course performance and student success.
